For patients who prefer a more subtle and versatile orthodontic treatment, the Invisalign clear aligner system is our most popular alternative to traditional metal braces. The clear, removable aligners are comfortable, convenient, and an excellent option for teens and adults looking for a discreet way to get the smile they desire.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to achieve the same beautiful results as braces, but without any brackets or wires. The plain plastic trays may appear to be a simple design, but they are actually constructed of a special type of thermoplastic resin that is strong enough to move the teeth into alignment by changing out these custom-made aligners weekly.

How does Invisalign work?

Once a patient has completed their initial exam with Dr. Hann and we’ve determined they are a good fit for the Invisalign system, we can begin the process of custom designing aligners, starting with a highly detailed 3D scan of the teeth and gums. We will use this scan to map out a precise treatment plan based on the needs and goals of each individual patient, which includes the exact movements we want the teeth to make. With Invisalign, we’re even able to give patients an estimate of how long we expect treatment to take and a preview of what their new smile will look like once treatment is complete!

The custom aligners used with the Invisalign system are created from a smooth and comfortable plastic that is virtually invisible.

The total number of aligners worn during treatment varies from patient to patient, as does the total treatment time, although it tends to average somewhere between 5 and 15 months. In order to maximize their effectiveness and see results, the aligners must be worn for 20-22 hours daily, throughout the entire course of treatment. Invisalign depends on patient compliance to create a healthy, straight smile.

Aligners will generally be switched out weekly based on each particular treatment plan, and we’ll schedule patients for regular check-ups with our office. These appointments will be roughly every four to eight weeks.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign’s biggest selling points are its near invisibility as well as its removability, but the benefits extend beyond that!

Because the Invisalign aligners are meant to be removed before eating or drinking anything other than water, there are no food restrictions, which can be one of the biggest learning curves with traditional braces. With no wires or brackets to consider, patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with Invisalign don’t have to take any of their favorite foods off the table.

Removable aligners also come in handy when it comes to allowing patients to continue their daily activities without much disturbance due to treatment. For those who play contact sports, the aligners can be removed and replaced with a regular mouthguard. Teens who are musicians also benefit since there are no wires or brackets to get in between them and their instrument. Invisalign is also perfect for special occasions like weddings, prom, homecoming, senior pictures, or any event where a patient’s natural smile is preferred.

The wires, brackets, and bands of traditional braces can sometimes make brushing and flossing effectively a difficult and time-consuming task. While it’s important to have a good oral hygiene routine all the time, it’s a crucial part of successful orthodontic treatment. With Invisalign, this can be achieved much easier, as aligners are simply taken out before brushing and flossing. Cleaning the aligners takes next to no time, as well. There are special kits available designed specifically to clean Invisalign aligners, or they can be gently cleaned using denture crystals and a soft toothbrush.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much does Invisalign® cost?

A: As with other types of orthodontic treatment, the cost of Invisalign® depends on the complexity of a patient's case. The cost is generally slightly more expensive than traditional braces, but find out what your treatment involves by contacting our office for a complementary appointment. We also do not let finances stand in the way of getting a beautiful smile. We offer a number of payment plans that make any treatment fit our patient’s budget.

Q: Does Invisalign® really work?

A: Yes. In both clinical research and in orthodontic and dental practices nationwide, Invisalign® has been proven effective at straightening teeth.

Q: Does insurance cover Invisalign®?

A: Because medical benefits differ significantly from policy to policy, each patient should review their coverage. However, if a patient has orthodontic coverage, Invisalign® should be covered to the same extent as conventional braces.

Q: What are aligners made of?

A: Aligners are made of clear, strong medical grade plastic that is virtually invisible when worn.

Q: What do aligners look like?

A: Aligners are nearly invisible and look similar to clear tooth-whitening trays, but are custom-made for a better fit to move teeth. Some orthodontists and dentists have referred to them as "contact lenses for teeth."

Q: How does Invisalign® effectively move teeth?

A: Like brackets and archwires, Invisalign® Aligners move teeth through the appropriate placement of controlled force on the teeth. The principal difference is that Invisalign® not only controls forces, but also controls the timing of the force application. At each stage, only certain teeth are allowed to move, and these movements are determined by the orthodontic treatment plan for that particular stage. This results in an efficient force delivery system.

Q: What is the minimum age of a patient that a doctor can treat with Invisalign®

A: Doctors can use Invisalign to treat a vast majority of patients with fully-erupted molars.
